On Friday Oct. 23rd the Alingano Maisu was hoisted into the air at NECO Marine. The boat underwent repairs before its launch for the traditional navigation class’ Overnight Star Watch on January 23-24.
The primary purpose of getting the boat out of the water was to repaint and repair the double hull of the vessel. During its time out of water the boat will also be undergoing repairs to its deck and railings. Some of the railings have rotted and will need to be replaced and relashed. This type of work is better done out of the water where the boat is steady. Another minor repair needs to be done to the portion of the ship which holds the mast, as it was broken when trying to remove the mast.
Repairs are done with lashings instead of nails, screws or bolts, the same way in which traditional sailing vessels were repaired.
Your Guide to Raising a
Catamaran in 4 Easy Steps |
Step 1
Find a boat and people to help you the boat. Preferably strong people.
Step 2
Find a giant crane and outfit it with custom nylon straps with spreader bars. Pull the straps under the boat and make sure that they are secure and stable. |
Step 3
Turn on the crane and lift away. Be sure to move slowly to keep the boat from flipping off of its nylon straps. Once the boat is lifted to a reasonable hight begin to rotate the entire boat to the left or right. |
Step 4
Once the boat is properly rotated above land place some logs covered with old couch cushions under the hulls. Gently lower the boat onto these cushiony props and begin your work. Congratulations! You can now raise a boat. |
